MTB Trails to Try in the Eastern Cape

Expect have your mind blown when you cycle along the single, jeep, forest, mountainous tracks and trails of the Eastern Cape. From deserted beaches to verdant forests and rolling hills, the Eastern Cape is a mountain bikers paradise. Here are five trails to whet your appetite.

Hayterdayle Trails
Near Addo
Grading: Beginner to expert
Distance/s: up to 45km

Take your cycling journey along undiscovered pathways in the tranquil abyss of Eastern Cape. Hayterdale Trails has already hosted its fair share of mountain biking competitions, such as the Cape Epic and many more. The trails are single track with a rough, natural terrain perfect for those wanting a challenging ride. Look out for the Zuurberg Pass, the road surface and gradient is fairly easy making it the ideal route to your to take in all those magnificent views.

Slipperfields MTB Trails
Port Elizabeth
Grading: Beginner to intermediate
Distance/s: 7 and 10km

While this place is better known as a wedding venue, Slipperfields is also a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by cyclists. Here, you will find maintained routes that meander along farmlands and dense trees. There are two main trails, one for the novice and the other for the more advanced cyclists. The easier route is a 10km grassy loop. The more challenging route offers many bends and loops over a shorter 7km trail.

3Rivers Trails

Grading: Beginner to extreme

For a good introduction to mountain biking, go for the 3Rivers Trails. They have a variety of trails that range from easy jeep track and single-track roads, to steep up-hills, down hills and complex terrains as well as technical routes. If you decide to visit 3Rivers consider visiting the Jbay Bike Park for an even more challenging experience. Here, you’ll find even more routes to choose from that will really test your skills. Training for the Cape Epic? Then go for the Grand Porcupine route designed with bridges, tough climbs and much more.

Baakens Valley
Overbaakens
Grading: Beginner to intermediate
Distance/s: up to 20km

Are you training for an event?  Explore  Bakkens Valley trails. In recent reviews, Baakens is considered one of the best places to train as the routes are tough and long. The routes range from 5km to 20km with a 7km tar road, perfect for training your technical and climbing skills, plus the circular routes can be lengthened to suit your needs. End off your training on the perfect note, grab a pint and some grub at the on-site pub and restaurant.

Cycle Roots Hogsback Mountain Biking Trails

Whether it is a myth or fact that J.R.R. Tolkien drew inspiration from Hogsback for his magnum opus – the Lord of the Rings – it is without a doubt one of the most magical, enchanting places in our beautiful country.  Take your bike along or rent one from Cycle Roots / Hogsback Adventures and cycle the routes yourself or take the 18km guided tour which takes you past not one, but eight waterfalls.
