Recently Olympic International had the opportunity to pick the brain of South Africa’s Proteas and Western Province netball player, Rochelle Loubser. We got her take on what you should do if you were interested in playing netball.
When did you start playing netball?
I started playing netball in grade 1. I was seven years old and the tallest girl in my grade and so I stood out as a potential netball player. I’m passionate about netball because you get to not only make lifelong friendships but enjoy that moment you get to put on your trainers between the four lines. There is no feeling like the feeling of winning a team when you know that it was an ultimate team effort where everyone gave it their best. I love this sport so much, I currently run and coach at Into the Net Netball Academy in the Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs and host school clinics in and around the Western Cape.
If someone has never played netball before, when is a good time to start?
The beauty of this sport is that you can start at any age. You can start playing netball at any time. So don’t waste any time. Start today!
What kind of equipment or gear will I need?
All you need is a good pair of trainers, determination and a fun personality is all the gear you’ll need.
How fit should I be to play netball?
Netball requires a good level of fitness, but if you’re returning to the game or starting out at a later age, it’s a good way to get fit. Short and sharp movements on a netball court will make you very tired, but you will build up endurance over time. It’s a great sport to help you keep in shape, and it’s just so much fun too!
What are the main positions played in netball and how will I know which position is the right position for me?
There are a number of positions on the netball court:
GS = Goal Shooter
GA = Goal Attack
WA = Wing Attack
C = Centre
WD = Wing Defence
GD = Goal Defence
GK = Goal Keeper
From the age of 7, you get the opportunity to play all of the seven netball positions, talent identification on what position suits you best will be seen in this developmental stage. Many players only develop these specific skills at a later stage. Position specific drills can be practised to better that specific position. Check out www.netballrules.co.za to read up on the rules of this game.
What are the key netball concepts I’ll have to grasp?
Attack, defence, 3 feet, 3 seconds, teamwork, positive attitude and fun fun fun!
