PwC Bike Park, Bryanston Sandton
Grading: Starts at 1 (easy) to 5 (difficult)
Distance: up to 13km
Consisting of eight trails that expand over 13km, these mountain biking trails are designed for every cycling level and every age group. Their trails have interesting names that give you some clue to the adventure waiting for you. Name such as Magical Forest, Inca + or Berm Baby Berm should get the mountain biking wheels in your brain spinning. They also have various areas that offer skills training that will help you to progress from complete beginner to advanced. A super fun venue that offers something for the whole family.
Avianto Trails, Muldersdrift
Grading: Easy to difficult
Distance/s: 6km and 17km
Head out to Muldersdrift and enjoy the pastoral scenes of the Avianto mountain biking trails. The green route (6km) is mainly on jeep tracks and gravel roads making it perfect for beginners. The blue route (17km) is listed as intermediate with plenty of challenging sections to keep you interested. The railway track and tunnel adds interesting notes to the trail, for the more skilled riders, there’s black routes.. The venue is about an hours drive outside of central Johannesburg so make a day of it. Take the family along and enjoy a picnic a riverside picnic, and a fully equipped clubhouse complete with comfortable change rooms, shower facilities and more.
Hakahana Trails, 15km outside Pretoria
Distance/s: up to 50km
Hakahana is a popular enduro, mountain biking and trail running venue. The former horse farm provides the perfect backdrop for the novice rider to the serious adventure seeker. With over 50kms worth of trails over terrains varying in technical complexity (includes an exclusive downhill track you need to book for) the Hakahana trails deserves the title of MTB bikers paradise.
Central Park MTB Trails, Modderfontein
Grading: Easy to Intermediate
Distance/s: 10km, 17km, 25km and 35km
Central Park’s looped trail system offers riders at different skill levels the chance to experience trails with lots of natural game and birdlife. Trails can be tailored to suit just how long or short you want your ride to be. Choose between the pastoral vistas of the Green route, the tree-lined Yellow route or the more advanced Red route, which features an ‘super-tube of a downhill’.
Kings Kloof MTB, near Krugersdorp
Grading: Easy to Extreme
Distance/s: 7km to 22km
Kings Kloof MTB trails takes you over river crossings, challenging downhills, natural pools, trees and much more. The 7km Green route traverses through a single-tracked flat trail, this is best for family rides and beginner cyclists. If you’re a beginner looking to take it up a notch try out the 14km Green Route which has more climbs. Intermediate and skilled riders will get their fix with the 17km Yellow route, 20km Red route and the 22.5km Black route.
